Gloria Harvell is in the process of writing an English curriculum for high school students. The curriculum is divided into units. Composition units provide lesson plans, grading tools, and student samples. Each literature unit includes classic and contemporary literature, informational texts, vocabulary study, and prompts for writing about the literature. Learning activities challenge students to think critically about what they read.
Literary and informational texts are selected to highlight the unit’s theme. Literary texts might include picture books, poetry, song lyrics, short stories, young adult literature, plays, novellas, and novels. Informational texts like speeches, essays, encyclopedia and periodical articles, reports, and editorial cartoons provide background for each literary text.
To engage 21st century learners, technology is used extensively. Online and workbook activities incorporate a variety of media forms (text, video, photography, music, art, etc.) to keep students interested and help them make connections between literature and their own world—rendering the literary canon meaningful and memorable.
